Last year one album was so different and twisted that it seared a spot in my brain, getting spun non-stop for an entire year. That album was ‘Southern Gothic’ by Rod Melancon and after roughly the 50th listen it gave me the idea to do album anniversary reviews, a website segment I started this past winter. These One Year Later articles allow me to look back on an album and in some cases get us into the time-frame when the artist might be working on their next album as well.
2017 was a great year for music and one of my absolute favorite albums to come out of it was ‘This Highway’ by Zephaniah OHora. This one seemed to pop out of nowhere for me; all of a sudden there it was, feeling fresh-yet-familiar, and sounding like a lost recording session from years past.
With her silver tongue a little less in-cheek, Sunny Sweeney sauntered her way into 2017 with a new album under her foam-dome. She called it Trophy, which is fitting because it landed on many a top-ten list in December, including my own. Sunny then proceeded to spend the year relentlessly touring with a group of bearded boys throughout the country, showing everyone that girls like to have fun too, and you don’t have to have facial hair to be an outlaw. One Year Later we look at the aptly named album, and why it was one of the best albums of 2017, and perhaps the top dog.
I came in pretty late to the music of Ags Connolly, his album ‘Nothin’ Unexpected’ was released a year ago this week, but I didn’t stumble on it until sometime late summer. When I was considering the idea of featuring an album that was released a year ago, Ags was the logical first choice; I felt like I really missed out finding him as late as I did, and I wanted to help make sure fewer people missed the boat. ‘Nothin’ Unexpected’ is a classic country album through and through, but what really stands out is how the whole album tells a story, it’s not just 10 different songs. This is an exceptional album, one of my absolute favorites of 2017, and I am proud to share it.
