There is no one quite like Charley Crockett. While several of my pre-orders were filled yesterday, the one I was most looking forward to was ‘Lonesome as a Shadow’ by Mr. Crockett. There is a raw honesty to his music, rooted deeply in many different styles; he blends them so effortlessly that he almost requires his own genre.
Charley is entirely responsible for my digging into several new types of music over the last year; his two previous albums of original material were so far outside of my normal listening that they opened my eyes to entire genres, and for that I am eternally grateful.
Last fall Charley dropped an album of classic country covers with his trademark vocal styling, which was right up my alley, and I did a write-up about it for Pitstop For Country. While I LOVED that album, and I listen to it regularly, it still left fans salivating for the original Charley style that we have come to love him for.
This new album is really a great blend of everything Charley has done in the past and more, at once fresh and familiar. We are treated to so much bluesy soul, great instrumentals from the Blue Drifters, and a steady flow of vintage feeling throughout. There are even a couple songs on here that would be perfectly at home at a sock-hop or blasting out the windows of a 57 Bel Air. Everything is real; the whole album plays as if live, without filter. Through the entire thing we are gifted with the distinct southern vocals that Charley has made his trademark, his style is his signature.
‘Lonesome As A Shadow’ was one of many albums I had very high hopes for this month, and it did not disappoint. There is so much influence bleeding into each song, so many styles at play that it is unlike anything else I have heard this year. Pulling everything together and marking it as his own is Charley himself, both with his vocals and lyrical content; there is a sense that he has lived everything he is singing.
This whole album has a solemn feel; even the more upbeat tracks are flush with traditional blues and country lyrical content, beautifully rooted in sadness. There is a passion to Charley’s voice that comes through in whatever he sings, an honesty that radiates through the highs and the lows. Charley is the real deal, a road warrior dedicated to music for decades, making a name as everything you didn’t know you needed in your ears.
‘Lonesome As A Shadow’ released yesterday, 4/20/18, and is available everywhere you buy music.
