Matt York is back with a new tune, one rooted in the pain and suffering of the heroin addict.
About a year ago I first heard the music of Matt York, I loved the mix of sounds he created, clearly not bound by any genre. His music had a country style, but a bit of an Americana blend as well, and no fear of throwing some rock guitar in the mix. In short he's my kind of musician.
A couple months later I was able to catch up with Matt at a show and get to know him a bit, we did an interview about his previous album ‘Between the Bars’ and what he was up to for the rest of 2018. (https://www.ioumusic.net/ioumusic/matt-york)
At that show I had the pleasure of hearing the songs I knew from his previous work, but he also did several songs that will be on his newest album, out this winter. One song caught my attention, a song about the world through the eyes of one mixed up in the opioid epidemic, it was a slow burn called “I Lost My Baby to The Needle”.
This song had me asking Matt if he had anything he needed to talk about; turns out he had begun seeing some of these users at outdoor gigs and became interested in understanding them and their addiction. He’s gone on to play awareness shows and benefits, meeting many folks in recovery and taking in their stories.
The video for “I Lost My Baby to The Needle” is directed by Matt’s wife Beth York and stars a couple who are long term recovering addicts. Matt is using the video to bring awareness and hopefully understanding to the addicted and their plight, including information at the end of the video for those who require help.
As someone with a family member and more than one friend who found themselves mixed up with opioids, this one hits close to home for me. There is a stigma and lack of understanding about those addicted, and those attitudes do not help lead to resolution. I’ve seen hope and signs of change in my area, hopefully things continue to come around, but it’s no easy task for those addicted.
