I'm excited about several releases in June, due to many artists I've followed for years putting out new albums this month. There are almost too many to list, but I picked a few I am really anticipating, half of which come out this Friday.
Karen Jonas: ‘Butter’ - Available 6/1/18
June starts off with one of my most anticipated albums of the year, ‘Butter’ by Karen Jonas. Karen’s last two albums played almost daily while I was building my house the last couple years, and she is easily one of my favorite country artists. Having now heard all the songs off this album, it is more of her brand of strong vocals, but less about characters and more of relating to her personal life in the lyrical mix. I’m particularly excited about the introduction of brass into several songs; I think it adds a special touch to her already distinct voice and Tim’s impeccable guitar work.
American Aquarium: ‘Things Change’ - Available 6/1/18
Quite the timely album name: Lead singer and songwriter BJ Barham did a complete band change-up last year and American Aquarium sounds as good as it ever has, perhaps even better. The last couple AA albums have really raised the bar and I expect this one to do more of the same if the pre-order songs I have heard are any indication.
Kyle Park: ‘Don’t Forget Where You Come From’ - Available 6/1/18
My wife and I have a running joke that anytime she hears Kyle Park on my radio she says “Who is this guy?” She knows damn well who it is, but there was a time where I would look at her with eyes wide and say “How can you not recognize that voice?” Kyle is a Texas Country staple that plays anywhere from honky tonk to country party songs; I’ve been following him for about a decade now, and I always get excited for a new album from him.
Jesse Dayton: ‘The Outsider’ - Available 6/8/18
One of the best axe-men in music is back with a new album this month. Jesse isn’t afraid to write songs about what he believes, and I expect plenty of that from what I have heard so far, so if you can’t handle that you should probably move on. I really loved Jesse’s last album, so this one is highly anticipated.
Right now you can download Jesse’s 2016 album ‘The Revealer’ (It's a great album!) for FREE on his website!
Paul Cauthen: ‘Have Mercy’ - Available 6/22/18
The Beast is back! Paul’s 2016 album 'My Gospel' was a revelation; it was like nothing else I had heard. Paul’s voice is deep and distinct, he isn’t afraid to try something different, and he puts on a great live show. Having heard a few songs off the new album live, and now having heard a couple on my pre-order, I can tell you that this EP will be more of what we love; a big voice doing things just a bit different than everyone else
Cody Canada & The Departed: ‘3’ - Available 6/29/18
I’ve been following Cody Canada for about 15 years now, since his days with Cross Canadian Ragweed, when they were young punks playing their own version of rock/country. Word is this album is going to be a bit of a throwback to those days, so you can bet your sweet ass that I’m all over it!
