May is going to bring more than just flowers: We have several highly anticipated and long-awaited albums hitting the street. Here is just a sample of the albums I'm excited about next month.
Erik Dylan: ‘Baseball on the Moon’ - Available 5/4/18
Erik had one of my favorite albums of 2016 with ‘Heart of a Flatland Boy’, so I have high hopes for ‘Baseball on the Moon’ next month. What I like about Erik is that I feel like he is painting a picture of his life, or one like it, and doing a hell of a job. Country with a rock edge, I really enjoy how upbeat most of his songs are; it’s a welcome departure from the low-key music I typically enjoy. (The video above is from his previous album)
Jamie Lee Thurston: ‘The Window’ – Available 5/11/18
Jamie Lee has a great mix of fun-loving tunes and serious country songs. He has a deep voice that emotes well, he doesn’t shy away from the electric guitars, and has a great attitude. Having heard the 4 songs on the pre-order, it’s clear his fans will be in for more of what they love. I’m partial to the title track with its depth and twist of his signature humor, but I also enjoy the passionate break-up tune ‘Givin’ Up Breathing’ because you just know he went through it.
Brent Cobb: ‘Providence Canyon’- Available 5/11/18
Brent Cobb is the second artist from my Best of 2016 list that has a new album out this month. Currently touring with Chris Stapleton and creating new fans with his distinct voice and southern rock vibes, this album is sure to find an even wider audience than his last.
Ashley Campbell: ‘The Lonely One’ – Available 5/11/18
I am always leery of the children of famous musicians; are they riding coat tails or where they blessed with talent like their parent? With Ashley Campbell (Daughter of Glen) the answer is pretty evident; she has the chops, just like dad did. Having paid her dues in dad’s band she is now starting a solo career on her own record label. There is no doubt she can sing and strum, so if the album content is anything like the previous single "Remembering", it's going to be a good one.
Jason Boland & the Stragglers: ‘Hard Times Are Relative’ -Available 5/18/18
Long-awaited is an understatement; in our house a JB album gets spun at least once a week, often more. These guys have made a career out of a style all their own, yet fitting nicely into the Texas scene. We already know there is a duet with Sunny Sweeney, and the rest I have heard are more of what we love.
Cody Jinks: ‘Lifers’ – “No later than June 2018” ????
You can’t talk about independent country music this year without mentioning Cody Jinks. There is no firm date that I have seen, but he’s confirmed the new album is coming in the first half of the year. Because of the vague time-frame, I’m including it in my May list because I’m not ruling out (And secretly hoping for) a “Surprise release”. If not, it will be added to the already impressive list of June releases.
Hang on tight after next month, because June is going to be a scorcher for new albums also. I’ll have a preview last week of May for you.
